The Hotel is a modern 3 star hotel located in a City Centre employing 100 staff. The hotel offers a wide range of facilities including 246 bedrooms, 12 meeting rooms, a large modern conference room, a quality restaurant, a bar and health and leisure facilities.

The hotel was already looking at ways to improve resource efficiency and reduce its environmental impact whilst at the same time making financial savings. As such the hotel had already implemented a number of measures prior to the Greenbusiness visit, including:

• Segregation of recyclables including paper and cardboard (baled), glass and food waste from the general waste stream, resulting in an approximate 80% diversion of waste from landfill.

Greenbusiness was able to suggest various further measures to consider, with large potential environmental and cost savings.  The site visit identified a range of recommendations with good associated potential benefits, including:

• Cost savings of over €8,000 per year, with many additional savings possible
• 10% reduction in food wastage by optimising portion size, reducing food costs and waste disposal costs
• 50% reduction in water use for toilet flushing and wash basins by using dual flush toilets and self closing/sensor taps
• 50% to 70% reduction in swimming pool heating through fitting thermostats and timer controls and installation of heat blankets.
