The food and drink site receives milk by tanker. Cream is separated from the milk, stored chilled in bulk, and dispatched for use as the cream base in other products.

Skimmed milk is concentrated, blended with non-dairy fats and other ingredients, and then spray dried and packed into 25kg sacks.

The site visits identified a range of recommendations with good associated potential benefits including:

• total savings from recommendations estimated to be €289,500
• savings of 235,000m³ water per annum by reusing evaporator condensate and installing water recirculation in the product pumps
• savings of 90,000kWh per annum may be achieved by generation of electricity with turbine from effluent outflow to lake
• if trials are successful, 9.1 tonnes of stretch wrap may be eliminated and replaced by a sack finish
• reduced waste sent to landfill by improving the segregation of solid waste.
